I wouldn't say it's "insane" that so many women object to being called "ma'am." There's a certain logic to it, since our society teaches young girls to value their appearance to such an extent. They need to so they can grow up to attract a man and bear him children! So if you associate the word "ma'am" with age instead of achievement, it's logical that you'd find it offensive.
